British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
