Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
