Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
